Traditional and Contemporary Sign Lettering Class

Layout and paint your own unique wooden sign in London!

In this workshop in London, you'll learn how to design and paint a beautiful upcycled sign for your home, an event, or to give as a gift. You’ll be guided through sketching and planning out your sign, using vintage fairground and Victorian-inspired lettering styles, or learning simple techniques for drawing your own letters if you prefer! This workshop is beginner-friendly and suitable for all skill levels -- no previous sign painting or lettering experience is needed. The session is fully guided, with plenty of tips and support throughout, so you can work at your own pace and enjoy the creative process.

What to expect:

Guidance on design layout and composition.

  • Learning vintage fairground and Victorian-inspired lettering styles, or simple techniques for drawing your own letters.

  • How to transfer your design onto board.

  • Using sign painting brushes, specialist tools, and materials.

  • Enhancing letters with colour, drop shadows and outlines.

  • Bringing your own wooden board to upcycle (we recommend priming and painting a background colour in advance -- you’re welcome to do this in the Remakery lab space on the Friday before your class, 10–5pm).

  • Alternatively, A3 black or white cardboards will be provided if you don’t bring a board!

By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a hand-painted sign, new lettering and sign painting skills, and the confidence to continue experimenting at home, plus a unique, vintage-inspired piece you can proudly display or gift.

Good to know:

We offer a subsidised ticket for most of our classes, particularly aimed at unwaged, under 25, or financially disadvantaged members of our community.

  • Our ‘True Cost Ticket’ reflects the prep time involved in running an eco-craft course and the cost of keeping a space like the Remakery open.

  • The ‘Pay it Forward’ ticket includes a donation towards the upkeep of our communal rooms and the continuation of our community programme.
